I am headed to Europe in a few days to meet Dan in Barcelona and visit Amaya in London. It’s pretty much a shotgun trip because I’ve only gotten as far as planning flights and accommodations. I bought tour books but haven’t had time to read them yet, and I don’t even have a train or plane ticket from Barcelona to London because I am not sure exactly when I will be ready to leave. I have no idea what to expect or where my adventures will lead me. It’s going to be glorious.
I’ve been looking forward to the travel both there and between cities (hopefully by a long train ride). Even though I will be meeting up with friends, a lot of the journey will be alone which probably lends itself best to introspection and random encounters with those around me. I hope to have the chance to read books (better yet listen to them on my ipod) and magazines and just sort of catch up with myself. I am also flying through Paris which will be an interesting opportunity to revisit 17 year-old me. I even considered spending a day there and staying in the hostel/residence hall where I spent a few weeks back then to see how I react to it today. As disconnected as I feel now from the naive person I believe I was then (and I will say this again about this moment ten years from now), Paris was my coming of age and a truly transformative time in my life. I remember being there at the time and writing it all down and feeling like I would remember it forever but now I don’t. Returning to Paris will be interesting because it is where I first truly discovered and nurtured my love of the city even though I didn’t quite understand it that way at the time (I confused it with French language and culture).
